Info about Montauk from the Montauk Chamber of Commerce
On the easternmost tip of Long Island is a picturesque retreat at land's end, with gentle rolling hills and steep sand bluffs at the point where the Sound meets the Sea; where fishing fleets, yachts and sailboats ride the tides to the Atlantic Ocean and Block island Sound. Montauk is also a stepping off point to New England, Block Island and Newport, as passenger ferries leave daily from the harbor in Lake Montauk.Montauk is surrounded by water on three sides and is close to the Gulf Stream which has a great and favorable influence on the local climate. Generally, the temperature is 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter than the Metropolitan area, which has the effect of extending the summer season for all who live in and visit this land's end community. Surfers travel from far and wide to be challenged by the surf at Ditch Plains, while sun worshippers enjoy the white sands of our ocean and bay coastlines. Windsurfers share beautiful Fort Pond Bay along with colorful sunfish, pedal boats and canoes. Montauk Downs State Park offers tennis courts and world renowned Montauk Downs - Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. One of the "Fishing Capitals of The World"... Montauk currently holds 30 of the world's records for sport fishing. Local waters abound with tuna, swordfish, marlin, mako sharks, bluefish, striped bass, codfish, porgies, blackfish, flounder, haddock, pollack and tile fish ... the list goes on and on. For those non-fishing boating enthusiasts, whale watching trips provide opportunities for close encounters with the great leviathans to the deep that abound in the pristine waters off Montauk Point. For the hiker, horseback rider and naturalist, there are miles of scenic and unspoiled trails in Montauk. There are two large oceanside State Parks: Hither Hills for camping and ocean bathing, Montauk Point State Park for hiking and bird watching of the many and varied species that migrate along the Atlantic "fly-away".. Along with all the numerous outdoor activities a visitor can partake in, there are many historical sights to dive into and explore. The Montauk Lighthouse, the most distinctive and best known structures on Long Island, is just one of them. The Montauk Lighthouse was commissioned by President George Washington in the 1790's, it was the first lighthouse in New York State and is the fourth oldest lighthouse in the United States that is still active. There are 137 steps to the top where the 390,t390 candlepower beacon rotates every five seconds and can be seen for 19 nautical miles. The lighthouse was leased by the Montauk Historical Society in 1987 and is now open to the public for tours. A museum and gift shop have also been added. These are just a few of Montauk's attractions. Come, explore, relax, enjoy, and find your own special place in Montauk and make it one of "the best times of your life."
Info about Block Island from the Block Island Chamber of Commerce
The Viking Ferry service allows you to spend a day, a weekend, or a season over on Block Island. Ten thousand years ago, glaciers pushed their way down the East Coast and left behind the rocks and soil that was to form this little paradise that we call home. The result was a cozy community (only around 800 folks in the winter), a land of stunning vistas and a very fragile ecosystem that we have had the good fortune to preserve for all to share. Because of the particular forces of nature that went to work on Block Island, no other place on earth shares its geography, nor its balance of species. A rarity indeed! Block Island is a rarity in another sense; it's a place that moves at its own pace and is known for a relaxed way of life. It's where "dressed up" means a pair of shorts. Islanders speak of going to the mainland as going "off island" — an expression of the feeling that Block Island is its own entity, as unique as the North Light or the 250-foot bluffs. We want you to come here and shed your whole way of life for a while. Forget your agendas and your deadlines, lose your ambitions and your daily planner; sink into natural splendor, clean air and the clear night sky. There's a story about a visitor who went into a café on the island and asked some of the regulars where the beach was. Four of the patrons turned around and each pointed in a different direction. Well, they all got it right. Perhaps the real reason Block Island was put on this earth was to make sure everybody gets enough beach time. More than 350 freshwater ponds (from natural springs) and 17 miles of beach invite you to jump in the surf, spend a lazy afternoon building a sandcastle or burying Dad in sand. Indulge in the novel you've never finished, or just take a snooze. This island is ours and this island is yours. Enjoy it and be kind to it.
Info about Martha’s Vineyard from the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce
The Viking Fleet for 2009 will make one trip to Martha’s VIneyard from Montauk in August. Crossing time is approximately 6 hours. Martha’s Vineyard is an island off the southern coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, covering about 100 square miles. The island is primarily known as a summer colony, when the off season population of about 15,000 swells to up to 80,000 on summer weekends. The island has many beaches and has a pleasant summer temperature (it rarely gets over 90 degrees). It is one of the most popular vacation retreats in America’s North East, and has traditionally attracted many celebrities from the worlds of politics and entertainment to its shores. Accommodation ranges from hotels, resorts, cottages and apartments to camping sites, and there are many historic buildings and houses offering accommodation. The island has its own Theatre Company and there are a number of annual events, markets and shows which attract visitors. There are six main towns on Martha’s Vineyard, including Oak Bluffs and Tisbury. The sailing and beaches are to die for!
